History

1969 - Coopers Square Shopping Centre was originally constructed in three phases between 1969 and 1974 as a joint venture between East Staffordshire District Council and Laing Properties, with construction engineers Laing Construction. The scheme comprised five major retail units and 46 smaller shop units, with only one of the malls, Underhill Walk, having been covered at the time.

1979 - Phase four, which involved an extension to the Sainsbury's unit (now occupied by W H Smith) and the addition of two further units (which have since been combined to create a unit for Superdrug), was completed in 1979.

1982 - A further extension was undertaken in 1982 when the land fronting onto New Street was acquired by developers for the construction of a single storey 50,000 square feet unit with a 200 space roof top car park. The architect and surveyors were D A Hall & Associates. Sainsbury's relocated to this unit and assigned the lease of their previous unit on Underhill Walk to Woolworths.

1994 - Between 1994 and 1995 the scheme underwent a complete refurbishment and the open precincts were covered. The main contractors were Laing Management, Gathard Brooke & Partners were the structural engineers and Crampin & Pring the architects.

1996 - Sainsbury’s relocated for a final time to a new purpose built unit on the other side of New Street in 1996 and their old unit was subsequently split into three separate units and let to BHS, JJB Sports (now HMV) and Au Natural.

The total retail area for the scheme is 35,766 sq m (385,000 sq ft) consisting of 70 units, 7 RMUs, and 5 kiosks.
